Zuckerberg seems to be trying to differentiate his vision from that of companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which have invested heavily in agents focused on coding and enterprise work. However, Meta could have an uphill battle in personal agents. Its AI efforts still lag behind the bigger AI labs. Unlike Google or Microsoft, it doesn’t have ecosystem access to people’s email or documents in the way Google or Microsoft do. The company has restructured itself to focus heavily on AI, reportedly moving 7,000 staffers to work on new AI initiatives, though it also laid off about 8,000 people in May. The company is also investing heavily in compute, noting in today’s earnings that it expects to spend $130 to $145 billion in capital expenditures in 2026. Yesterday, it announced that it’s building a 1 gigawatt data center campus in partnership with BlackRock.
