HOME AWAY FROM HOME This is my anti AI computer, as in a place where tokens cant reach me, 2x pico 2040, one to drive the display and keyboard and one to drive the floppy drive with pio, keyboard is artsey.io chords with 2 extra keys, the battery is 2x18650 3000mah, has about 24 hours life with display on full brightness, or 1 week if I use eink, the floppy is just old floppy sony mpf. The os is small os with forth as a language and also has apple2 emulator to run some apple games from the floppy, and also emulator that can run zork2 compiled bytecode.

The pcb is cut on my cubiko cnc but with my own heightmap code that does very good interpolation as the FR2 copper clads are very bendy and can have 0.6-0.7mm between highest/lowest point, also I made the design so the cnc moves only X or Y but never both otherwise error just accumulates and its hard to do 0.2mm traces. I used 0.8mm fishtail endmill. Some people can do 50wpm on artsey but I can barely do 15 :) still working on it though.

The tension is that all the code is vibecoded, the display driver, the cnc software, the pcb software that generates gcode, the os itself, its 6502 and zork zil emulators, the floppy controller, the spi rpc between the picos, the forth interpreter, everything. I said few words and it appeared in my hands. So the software has no value to me, but the artifact as a whole I do enjoy and I really like the sound the floppy makes.

I am sure if I would’ve written all this code it would’ve taken me months to do this, and I am sure I would’ve enjoyed it more, in a “I hunted my dinner” kind of way, but I need to get used to just getting the thing that does what I want and move on, like eating at McDonalds. [ By McDonalds I mean the total alienation between me and my food, When I was 12 years old I was a shepherd for a bit, and sometimes I had to eat animals I was friends with, I had deep emotional relationship with my food, and now it is just calories I consume. ]

And so, the place I go to escape from AI is made by AI. I can deny it, and slowly go mad as it engulfs and suffocates me, or I can just grief and accept that what I loved to do is now done by machines. I am a racing driver in a self driving car. At the moment the car has somewhat cryptic interface and few can really get the most out of it, for some the car can fly, for some it moves backwards, but this will change.
