US boosts drone surveillance as flesh-eating screwworms spread in Texas

The effort involves at least 200 drones owned by the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. However, it’s unclear if any of the drone flights may have led to detections of animals infested by screwworms in the United States. The main drone featured in the animal health surveillance campaign appears to be the Skydio X10 quadcopter, which carries a thermal imaging sensor capable of detecting temperature differences. With the landowner’s permission, the drone teams arrived shortly after sunrise to survey both livestock and wildlife on the ranch. Besides using drones for aerial surveillance, USDA has also relied on stationary cameras installed near trails to make more than 26,000 animal observations. From detection to eradication

That method, called Sterile Insect Technique, was originally successful in eradicating flies from the United States and Central America and pushing the screwworm population back beyond the Darién Gap at the border of Panama and Colombia. To combat the spread, the USDA jointly funds and manages a sterile fly production facility with Panama that releases about 100 million sterile flies each week. Now that US screwworm cases have appeared, the USDA has been working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to build a new sterile fly production facility at Moore Air Base in South Texas.
