Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei called on the US government to regulate AI companies within a wider effort to slow the pace of the technology’s development in an essay published Saturday. The essay received rare endorsement from both OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Elon Musk, who owns chatbot Grok, following a week of intense debate about the technology’s threats to human safety. Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella also called for pacing development. Calls for AI slowdown and regulation have intensified after a number of researchers voiced major concerns in the last week about the speed of the technology’s advance. “AI progress is increasing,” former DeepMind researcher Rishub Jain told WIRED. “And as AI becomes more capable, it poses more risks.” 在过去一周，多位研究人员对人工智能技术的进步速度表示严重担忧，随后关于放缓 AI 发展和加强监管的呼声愈演愈烈。“人工智能的进步正在加速，”前 DeepMind 研究员里舒布·贾恩（Rishub Jain）告诉《连线》（WIRED）杂志，“随着人工智能变得越来越强大，它带来的风险也随之增加。”
But David Sacks, co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, wrote on X, “If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible. But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Amodei had requested the government enable competing AI companies to work together on standards without breaching antitrust law, either by participating in discussions or issuing a waiver for the companies involved. Concerns about the US ceding its lead in the technology to China have caused the US government to mostly push back against the notion of slowing the pace of its development. “You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen,” Trump said during a visit to Ireland. “We’re leading China on AI,” he added, “and, frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins.” 由于担心美国在技术上的领先地位被中国取代，美国政府大多反对放缓发展步伐的观点。特朗普在访问爱尔兰期间表示：“有很多负面力量在提出这个问题，他们本不该提出，而且他们提出的事情根本不会发生。”他补充道：“我们在人工智能领域领先于中国，坦率地说，我希望保持这种状态，因为谁赢得了人工智能，谁就赢得了未来。”
The US largely views China’s AI ecosystem as an economic and national security threat and has previously been caught short by the country’s advances in the technology. “If Congress just races in and does some sort of emergency session to try to regulate AI, we will lose the race to China, and that is a threat to every single American,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told CNN on Sunday. “So, we’ve got to have balance. In the meantime, companies say they are going to start taking voluntary steps to reestablish public trust that they are acting responsibly. On Sunday night, OpenAI’s Altman committed to a proposal by Amodei to give embedded third-party evaluators employee-level access to their firms to check that practices and products are safe and to report incidents.
